The village of Montebello is purely residential with homes separated by a great distance and by the naturally wooded surroundings. Housing units range from medium single family homes to contemporary mansions and communities of townhouses and luxurious apartments/condos. Montebello has a large diversity of wildlife in its local parks and woods, with the white tailed deer unquestionably being the "mascot" of the village. The village is characterized by a scenic and peaceful environment that gives the impression of being in a remote forest. Nevertheless, Montebello is conveniently located near the main roads of route 202 and route 59, where most local businesses are located.

Although some of the schools of Ramapo Central School District are officially listed as being in Suffern, on the map the unclear and "blurry" boundaries between the two villages make Montebello seem like the true home of Viola Elementary School, Montebello Elementary School, Suffern Middle School and Suffern High School.
